empathy

Do you get “lost” in books? I do. I tend to binge when I read, consuming novels in a few hours or in a “day”, even if that means staying up late into the night to do so. I remember as a teen that my emotions were absolutely controlled by the story I was reading, mostly leading to great despair, lol. (I don’t think I read many novels with happy endings back then.) I’m better able to control my responses now–no matter what I read–but I’m still emotionally transported by a good story. A new study finds that reading fiction not only gives us strong emotional experiences but that it also influences our ability to be empathetic. I couldn’t help but think of that study when my friend Libby sent me this link to a...

Mackinac Island. It’s a magical place that allows you to step back in time from the moment you first step off the ferry. Authors Cara Putman and Melanie Dobson have teamed up for a tour of the island, now and then. Comment at each stop for a chance to win a copy of one of their books set on Mackinac Island. You’ll find the list of stops here. Share the tour on twitter, Facebook, pinterest and other places, and you’ll gain extra entries for the grand prize of a copy of each of their books and a 5 slice box of Murdick’s Fudge, straight from Mackinac Island. Just be sure to email Cara at cara@caraputman.com, so she can record your entries. The grand prize winner will be selected August 27, 2012. The night sky is breathtaking on Mackinac Island in...

After the deadline

(The kitchen and bathroom in particular.) And I did run some errands. But mostly I read, pretty much nonstop. Partly because I was post-deadline but mostly because the novel was Lynn Austin’s Wonderland Creek. It is a delightful, tall tale sort of a story that I practically devoured in one sitting. The only thing that stopped me was when I read, twice, the same line, exactly, that I used in Courting Cate, which releases in the fall. (So glad I finished writing that novel before I read this one.) You’ll have to read both books to find the line. I’m a little...
