Favorite historical sites + a giveaway!

I’ve been to some amazing places when it comes to research trips for my novels. Paris, Lyon, Valence, Le Chambon, and Normandy, France. Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Nappanee, Indiana. New York City. Williamsburg and Richmond, Virginia. North Carolina. And all over the West. And even to Vietnam, although at the time I didn’t realize I was on a research trip (that’s a whole other blog post).

Peter cannonLeslie LincolnYesterday my husband and I visited Gettysburg after a wonderful research trip to Lancaster County. We’d been to the battlefield before, thirty years ago, when we were in our 20s and brand new parents. Since then we’ve had three more children; survived hubby’s thirty years in the Army Reserve, including two deployments and three mobilizations; and have grown a whole lot older, lol.

I have to say, Gettysburg is still one of the places that I revere the most, and as a 55-year-old woman the loss of life impacted me in a more powerful way than when I was 25, I’m sure. Gettysburg has to be one of the most sacred places in our nation, plus a reminder of the brutality of war, especially when it was against each other.

May we always work for justice and liberty for all, so we don’t have to fight for it ever again.GetAddress

This is my favorite line from President Abraham Lincoln’s “Gettysburg Address,” presented November 19, 1863, four months after the battle: “It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced.”

CousinsDoveIn My Daughter’s Prayer, the third and last novel in the Cousins of the Dove series co-authored with Mindy Starns Clark, the protagonist in the historical thread is a Southern Belle faced with injustice. She lives in Richmond, Virginia and volunteers in a Confederate hospital and must make a decision of her own about that “unfinished” work. The book releases TODAY, July 1, and I’m celebrating with another giveaway!

To enter-to-win a set of the Cousins of the Dove Series, leave a comment below about your favorite historical site or one you’d like to visit. The contest will run through July 6, and I’ll choose a winner using random.org.

I love Williamsburg, Virginia! I have been there several times.
But, living 10 miles East of. Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, I would have to say that is “Hallowed Ground”….that we “locals” take for granted . (Because it is in out backyard…) I am making a promise to myself to spend more time on the Battlefield of Gettysburg.

We are a family of Civ War re enactors. As we speak my sons are on the Gettysburg Battle Field with the Valley Division Cannoneers detail getting drowned lol. The rest of us were unable to make it due to circumstances,
It is so so wonderful to see comments of people who appreciate history and its powerful message. There have been times I admit we have had doubts whether anyone other then us truly understood the gravity and importance our history plays in forming us as a people and a society. Whether or not there was any true appreciation. Comments like these however and the appreciation for our sacred sites and past sacrifices make the heat, weather, and cost all worth while. Gives us a little prod to keep our history alive

I haven’t been to many historical places. Only two that I can remember. One when I was about 13, The Hermitage, home of Andrew Jackson if I remember correctly. The other was nearing my fortieth year and I’m not really sure if it’s considered historical but it made a big impression on me. Mount Rushmore. The massive size of the President’s heads are not captured as grand in pictures. I would love to go see it again.

My family and I visited Plymouth, NC last year and saw several historical sites. Especially memorable was a house that still has bullet holes from the civil war. We also saw the Albemarle iron clad replica. There was a sign that showed a building that was part of the underground railroad. On one of our trips to the beach We stopped to visit a plantation home of a public official in the 1700’s. Such an interesting way of life then.

I now live in Idaho but I grew up in Illinois. Back in the 70’s, my 6th-grade class took a field trip to Springfield, Ill. to see the restored log cabin Abraham Lincoln grew up in, and also the park in that surrounding area named after him. I was living at that time in Charleston, Ill. and the old stone courthouse in the downtown Charleston square is where Abraham Lincoln studied and practiced law before he became president. I heard a lot about A. Lincoln as a kid because I lived in his home state. NOW, I would love to see ALL the Civil War historical battle sites and the house where Robert E. Lee signed the surrender. ALSO, would love to see Lancaster, PA and the Amish world. Would be so fascinating if I could. Thanks for the chance to win the new books–exciting!

I enjoyed that the people who worked at the historical sites stayed in character and it made me feel as if I was taken back in time. Finally, I like the Northkill area in Pennsylvania because my relatives were the Amish that was there when an Indian massacre occurred and they began to migrate to other places. Jacob Hochstetler was my relative.

I am fascinated with the under ground railroad that operated during the Civil war. The state of Ohio had several points where the travelers could get directions, nourishment and encouragement. I’ve ready several books centered around this major undertaking and I have visited within Ohio several of those. Makes you feel good to know that humans were helping humans. I love reading historical novels, they remind us of how valuable our history is.

My parents grew up near Gettysburg and it is still my favorite place to visit! There is a quietness in my spirit when I visit – reflecting on that great battle.

My father, the history buff, dragged us to all the Civil War battlefields when we were kids. He must be laughing someplace because I returned as an adult with a church history background and spent days wandering….

I would love to win these books. Thanx for the opportunity

The Freedom Trail in Boston is a great historical “site” – I guess multiple sites – remembering those that fought to make our country the free place that it is today. From Boston Harbor to the Old North Church each place is a little place of our country’s beginnings. Very cool.

When we travel in the US, I love to see how America was formed by courageous people, whether it was the patriots of the 1700’s, the brothers who fought against brothers in the Civil War, or those who braved the unknown dangers on the Oregon Trail. We are blessed to live in such a country.

I will never forget the trip our family took to Colonial Williamsburg when I was a child. Closer to our home in Florida, we have enjoyed many visits to St. Augustine, our nation’s oldest city. I enjoy the combination of Old World, such as cobblestone streets, and New World adventure we find there. Of course, the Atlantic Ocean nearby isn’t too bad either!

I enjoyed visiting Williamsburg, VA–especially since I got to visit my daughter and her husband at the same time. My husband was a history teacher, so we’re always looking at historical places when we travel.

Unfortunately, we never traveled as kids or after I got married. Never been to any historical places. If I had the funds, I’d love to go to Mihla, Germany. My dad was in the Army. On April 4th, 1945, my dad and 3 of his comrades were killed when the vehicle they were in was hit. All 4 died instantly. They had just liberated Mihla. The town erected a memorial stone in memory of dad and his 3 comrades outside of the old post office. There are pictures and information about dad and other 3 are on display at the museum located in Mihla’s Town Hall. To me that’s a historical land mark!
