It is my honor to host the incredible Ronie Kendig. She and I met years ago at a writers’ conference. I’ve enjoyed her military-inspired books and look forward to reading her speculative fiction! I need to get going because Accelerant is the second in her Abiassa’s Fire series! Here’s a sneak preview:
He’ll destroy the world. But first he has to save it.
The Nine Kingdoms bleed. Leaderless, ravaged, the land awaits deliverance from Poired Dyrth’s devastating campaign. But what if one blight can only be cleansed by another?
The promised Fierian is known by many names. Judge. Destroyer. Scourge. And now one other: Haegan, Prince of Seultrie. Once a cripple, now a gifted Accelerant, Haegan can no longer run from the truth. But neither can he be reconciled to it. He knows only one thing for certain: as the only able-bodied heir to the Fire Throne, he must return to the Nine and fight for his people.
But there are insidious forces at work. When reality itself falls into question, Haegan struggles to know where to fight, whom to trust. Caught between duty to his country and duty to the world, Haegan must see clearly enough to choose the right path to save the world.
And following is fascinating insight into Ronie’s creative process:
Creatures & Powers in Fantasy, by Ronie Kendig
I confess, one of the great reasons I love writing speculative fiction is because of the freedom inherent in crafting the worlds (yet, there are always “rules” guiding those freedoms). Thinking back through some of my favorite fantasy novels and movies, I am reminded of the great eagles in the Lord of the Rings, who are sent to help the characters. Our family recently watched Warcraft, the movie based off the World of Warcraft games, and I found myself mesmerized by the orcs. And the TV series, Shannara, based off the books Shanarra Chronicles, brings elves to life as well. And I love Vulcans, people with unique abilities. And the Avengers, who have either equipment to give them superhuman abilities, or who have gained abilities.
It’s fine to build and design creatures—to have fun with them. But it’s vital to remember that the story is ultimately about the protagonist. Regardless of the creatures and their abilities, the story must always come back to the fight between good and evil (whether figurative or literal). The characters must step up with courage not previously known and fight to overcome!
ACCELERANT is the second novel in Abiassa’s Fire, a high/epic fantasy series set on a planet called Primar. Within that world there are normal people—much like you and me. But I’ve also crafted creatures inherent in the belief system of the population, taking cues from our own mythical creatures. Here’s a quick peek at some of the creatures and gifts within the Abiassa’s Fire series.
DRIGO – A race of giants who have hidden themselves in the mountains. Myth says that the drigo, centuries past, were enormous and immortal. For centuries they have been thought of as simply “overgrown” people, but with the advent of events on Primar, the drigo are released from their smaller selves.
RAQINE – The raqine are enormous cat-like creatures with wings and an ability to bond with a single rider. They are tethered to the will of Abiassa, though they are loyal to their riders.
DELIVERERS – Fierce, warring beings able to exist both corporeally or noncorporeally. They can be in two places at once. They are the return of justice by Abiassa, dealing severely with those in Her service who have turned to the darkness.
ACCELERANTS – those gifted by Abiassa to harness and wield heat/fire; their purpose is to protect the planet and people but many have lost their way.
Thank you, Ronie! I’m so impressed with the worlds you create! Amazing!
